Haldir glanced around the forest. His brothers were not far behind, bringing up the rear. He had heard soft footsteps during the night and was now following the trail to the river. No one would have or could have gotten across it without his assistance. He stopped and narrowed his eyes in concentration. "Who or what could it have been?" He wondered out loud.

Airendiel sat in the tree she had jumped into when she heard another elf coming, she barely dared to breath. When the elf-man walked into her view she leaned forward, trying to get a better look at him. She realized too late that she had leaned too far forward. She squeeked a bit when she started to fall, hitting the ground on her back. "Oww, ok, that was definately a bad idea." She was speaking mostly to herself, but she didn't doubt that the man could hear her.

Haldir stopped and tilted his head slightly at the fallen elf maiden. He looked up the tree to the branch she had no doubt just fallen out of and then back to her. It was a curious thing that someone, even an elf, could have gotten past him. It made him suspicious. He narrowed his eyes in subtle annoyance and asked, with a little harshness in his voice, "Who are you and what are you doing here?"

Airendiel groaned and pulled herself to her feet. "Airendiel Noldoriel, I appoligize for startling you, it was not my intention. I am here because I needed to get away from home." She felt a tug of pain at remembering why she needed to get away from home. She bit her lip to keep from crying, especially in front of a stranger. 'I will not depend on anyone for my strength.' She thought desperately to herself.

Haldir eyed her suspiciously. "Why are you leaving your home?" He asked, his voice still harsher then he had intended.

Airendiel sighed and sat down on the ground, she looked up at the man, "I would recomend sitting, it's a long story. One that I have no pleasure in telling, for the events are still painful to me." She looked down at her lap and closed her eyes, 'It seems now that I have no choice but to depend on others.'

Haldir stared at her in disbelief for a moment and then found a rather comfortable boulder to sit on. "Go on, I am listening. If anything is too painful, you do not have to tell me. It's just my duty to know what brings visitors to Lorien." He said softly, hoping his softer tone would help to make her more comfortable in telling her tale.

Airendiel looked up, hoping some of the pain in her eyes was hidden. 'Perhaps telling someone will make the pain less.' She sighed, "What you first must understand that I never knew my true family, just the family that adopted me. They already had two sons, I think they were hoping that a daughter would help around the house. Not that I didn't, just not as often as I was practicing my sword-fighting with my brothers." She paused and took a deep breath, preparing herself agianst the pain to come. "Now for the full story. One afternoon, my brothers and I went out for a walk. I tried to convince them to take their swords, but they laughed and said I was worring too much. Once we were out of the valley we were ambushed by orcs." Her voice broke as she remembered. "My brothers used anything they could to fight them off, but we were out-numbered, we couldn't win. I did my best to protect them and myself, but I failed in both those places." She brushed the barely visible scar at her hairline and the scar on her shoulder with a hand. "When the fight was over I tried to heal my brothers, but I was too late. My eldest brother was already dead, though the other was still alive he was too badly wounded for me to save him. I did not even notice my own wounds, I just tried to get their bodies home. I must have been a sight, covered in their blood and mine, and the blood of my enemies." She paused again to hold back the tears. "After the funeral, my father told me that it was my fault they were dead, he said he never wanted me in his house again. So I left, with help from my mother, and headed here." She felt the tears rolling down her cheeks and hung her head to hide them.

Haldir listened intently but remained silent after she was finished. He just didn't know what to say after a tale like that. He felt for her, for sure, but he was at a loss for words, and he refused to turn to his brothers for help for they were too far away to have heard her tale.

Airendiel looked up at the man, "I'm sorry if my tale made you feel uncomfortable. That was not my intention." She suddenly thought of something, "You have heard my tale and my name, yet I know nothing of you. Who are you and what is it that you do here?" She tilted her head to the side in question.

"I am not feeling uncomfortable. I just never heard something like that before." Haldir said. "My name is Haldir and I am the marchwarden here in Lorien. That is the reason for my suspicious behavior." He smiled softly at her.

For the first time since leaving Rivendell, Airendiel smiled. "Well in that case Haldir, perhaps you can direct me to city here. I'm not entirely sure where I should go." She rose to her feet and streatched.

Haldir stood and beckoned for his brothers to come beside him. "These are my brothers, Rumil and Orophin. They will remain here while I escort you to the City. It is part of my duty to escort strangers to the Lord and Lady of the City. We will have to cross the river with a rope bridge, another reason for my brothers to remain behind." He smiled and waited for her response.

Airendiel smiled and bowed to Rumil and Orophin, "Well then, let us be off." She smiled again at Haldir, somehow it was easy to be happy around him.

Haldir motioned for his brothers to cast the rope across so he and Airendiel could cross. He crossed first so he could help Airendiel off the other end.
