Ezzy laughs, interupting Pippin in the middle of his rather long story, "Enough, enough, you keep going on like this and we'll still be sitting here come mid-summer!"

The hobbit talk is interrupted by the timely delivery of ale. He immediately stops his endless stream of talk, and replies. "Oh, maybe some other time. Your good health!" Pippin toasts merrily to Ezzy.

Ezzy toasts in return, "And yours! May I never find a better drinking partner!" She takes a swig, "All this talk of family has got me thinking. I don't suppose you would happen to know where my old uncle Bilbo ran off to after his 111st Birthday. I asked Frodo but didn't get a decent answer."

"Hmph! Tell me about it. Took me ages to squeeze an answer out of him, and even then he just told me that Bilbo had went away. I asked him where to, but he said he didn't know. I was properly annoyed, but our dear Frodo is always that secretive, so I had actually forgotten until you asked me. 'Tis a mystery to me." The thunder booms outside, and Pippin gulps down a quarter of his ale. He grins contentedly.

Ezzy props her left elbow on the table and puts her chin in her hand, her other arm laying perpandicular to it and her ale sitting at her right elbow. "You seem to know more than you let on about this whole thing Pip. Besides Frodo I've not heard anyone mention Black Riders, they're not really a common conversation topic." She reaches for her ale and takes a swig, "Come on and tell dear Ezzy the truth."

Pippin's grin vanishes quickly. He stares off moodily into the distance for a bit, then glances fearfully at Ezzy.
"Ezzy, I don't really like telling that story. Are you sure you want to hear it? Is it absolutely essential for your well-being? I'd rather not scare you."

Ezzy sighes, "Pippin, after sneaking glances at old Bilbo's book and Frodo's after him very little scares me." She grins, "By the way, I've never actually talked to dear old Frodo about Black Riders, I got that from the book one time when I took a peek. So I logged it away in my memory." She drinks the last of her ale and orders more for them both and looks at Pippin pleadingly, "C'mon now Pip, tell me the story, at least up untill dear old Bilbo comes in, then you can stop for now."

Pippin looks around uneasily and shudders. "All right. But let's sit by the fire... it somehow seems less scary that way." He manages a weak smile as he gets up, leaving out a hand for Ezzy. "C'mon."

Ezzy grins as she takes Pippin's hand, a bit of warmth shooting through her at contact. She leads him to the roaring fire burning in a corner hearth. She sits in a rather comfortable easy-chair and gestures to the one next to her. "It's alright if you don't want to tell me all of it Pip. I can understand if it's too much."

Pippin, reassured at the friendly contact, plopped down in the proffered chair. "I actually got the story from another traveler. I was too drunk to notice what happened at first, and he watched me out a window after I had left the pub." "It was a long night at the tavern..." he began. "One drink led to another, and before I knew it, eight pints; down the hatch! The stars vanished outside after number nine, and rain started falling after number eleven or so. Soon after, there was a full-blown storm. The roof started leaking and many people started to leave. I started spouting nonsense at number thirteen... which was when the entire pub became quiet."
"All the people in the room stopped mid-word. The landlord stopped pouring beer, the drunkards stopped rambling... except for me. Alas! Then, most everybody ran behind the bar to hide. I was far past gloriously drunk by then, and I couldn't even tell where I was. However, I did notice that the pub was empty, so I figured that it was time to leave. I staggered to the door and out, singing some sort of song. It was pitch-black outside, and raining buckets. Even in my drunken stupor, as I dragged myself outside, I felt a kind of irrational fear. Nevertheless, I stumbled to the main path and tried to find my way home through blind night and a completely pickled state."
"Before I had even taken three steps, a streak of lightning highlighted a black horse with a black rider on it, about five feet away. I would have bolted for the sheer terror I felt, but I was too drunk to even notice, much. I think I wished him a good evening, and a good night. Then, I promptly passed out, leaning on his horse."
"By then, there was lots of lightning, for the traveler who was watching me could see relatively clearly. He says he saw me swoon, and do a faceplant on the muddy path. The black rider dismounted, stooped over me, and pressed some sort of stone on the back of my head, perhaps it was a rune. Then, he left. Perhaps he was trying to instill the fear of Mordor in the Shire, who knows?"
"They found me on the road the next morning, trembling all over, with a fever that would not abate. All I know is it took me five weeks to recover. And since then, I've never drank more than five pints of ale."
He shuddered with the recollection. "So Ezzy dear, that's why I'm afraid of thunderstorms. But oh well, they're all right with a roaring fire and a friend, eh?" He grinned happily, not forgetting his story, but not minding it for the present.

Ezzy smiled kindly, "Well it's no where near so bad as the tid-bit regarding Black Riders I read from the book. I was expecting something far more horrific." She pulled her legs up beneath her in the chair and propped her head on her hand. "While I've had nothing near so exciting happen to me, I can tell a few stories of my own if you wish to hear them."

Pippin leaned forward eagerly.
"Yes, please! I would love to hear some stories." he practically screamed.

Ezzy pursed her lips off to the side in thought, "Well, let's see, I think the best one was when I was out in the Old Forest and actually got entirely lost. Let me see where to start." She thought for a moment, "Well the begining is probably best." She tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear and began.
"This was somewhere between five and seven years ago, so keep in mind I was still in my tweens. I snuck out of the hole one day, nicked a pony and rode all the way down to Buckland from Hobbiton. I rode straight for the Hedge, after I found the 'secret entrance' I hopped off my pony and went right in." She paused to refresh her memory. "I wandered around for a while, not following any set path. Before I know whats happened I'm at the Withywindle, I cross at a suitable ford, not thinking entirely straight, and try find a place to sit, so I can sort out what happened. I came upon a rather hoary old willow tree, and before I even had time to think I'm off dead asleep. The next thing I know I hear this loud cracking noise and I felt myself falling out of the tree, if that makes any sense at all. In front of me is a rather fat fellow, not tall enough for one of the Big People, but not small enough to be a Hobbit. He introduces himself as Tom Bombadill. He takes me to his house and itroduces me to his wife, a lady Goldberry. He feeds me in a quite generous manner and lets me sleep there for the night. The next day he sends me off on a little pony down the road and soon I'm home, safe and sound. With a rather strange story to show for it."

"Aye, that's a very interesting story indeed. Almost reminds me of something, too..." said Pippin thoughtfully.

Ezzy laughed, "Don't tell me you've met this strange fellow too Pip. Although I admit that it'd help me know that I'm not entirely cracked." She grinned and rolled her head on her neck to get the kinks out.
